Nürnberg - Giving up sugar sounds like a good idea. But the craving for something sweet doesn‘t always disappear. These banana bread balls with nuts are a healthy alternative for snacking.

Anyone who has tried cutting out sugar knows the feeling: Everything is going well - until sudden cravings hit. That‘s exactly what these banana bread balls are made for. They contain no refined sugar and taste like moist banana bread in a mini version. And best of all, they‘re incredibly quick to prepare and provide a solid energy boost.

Ingredients for about 10 banana bread energy balls

  • 1 ripe banana

  • 60 grams ground almonds

  • 30 grams finely chopped walnuts

  • 40 grams rolled oats

  • 2 tablespoons almond butter

  • 1 pinch of cinnamon (optional)

  • 80 grams dark chocolate (at least 85% cocoa and sugar-free)

Mash the banana very finely in a bowl using a fork. Add the ground almonds, walnuts, rolled oats, almond butter, and cinnamon if desired, and mix everything thoroughly.

The almond butter makes the mixture smoother and helps the balls hold their shape. If you have a blender, you can of course use it to combine the ingredients - but a fork works perfectly well too. The mixture should be soft but easy to shape. If it‘s too moist, add a little more oats; if it seems too dry, mix in another teaspoon of almond butter.

Shape the mixture into about ten to twelve evenly sized balls and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes until firm.

Carefully melt the dark chocolate over a water bath (double boiler). Dip the chilled balls into the chocolate or drizzle it over them, place them on baking paper, and refrigerate again until the chocolate coating has set.
