The former prison in Neuburg an der Donau is up for sale, according to br24.de. At the end of July 2025, the last inmates left the site after the state of Bavaria shut down the facility due to its lack of economic viability. Since then, the complex has stood empty. In order to prevent further deterioration, the municipality is now planning to sell the property.
For a long time, the city administration had considered purchasing the historic old-town site itself. Meanwhile, the youth detention center in Neuburg-Herrenwörth remains in operation.
For prospective buyers, the expansive property offers considerable creative freedom. According to Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), almost any type of future use is conceivable.
In a video produced by the public broadcaster, Christina Nick of „Immobilien Freistaat Bayern“ explains that all security-related features have already been removed from the premises. However, elements such as the cell bars remain and can be reused by whoever takes over the former prison. „What you see is what you get,“ Nick says in the video. Workshop rooms, cell bars, and the heavy doors can either be repurposed for new uses or at least lend the property their own distinctive charm.
The building also has a historic background that can be actively built upon and used as an argument for future use. Neuburg Prison was constructed in the old town and is a listed historic monument, with structural elements dating back to the 16th century. The site previously housed the riding academy of the Wittelsbach family. Every two years, the popular Schlossfest festival is also held in the area surrounding the former prison.
Interested parties can submit their bids to the state of Bavaria. The highest bidder will be awarded the contract and will be free to redesign the former prison according to their own ideas - for example, by turning it into a second prison hotel in Bavaria. The first of its kind has been located in Amberg for several years.
