Attention drivers! Starting next week, one of Nürnberg’s main traffic arteries will be closed. As part of ongoing construction to renovate the harbor bridges, sections of the Südwesttangente near the Nürnberg-Hafen interchange will be shut down.
Preparatory work starting as early as next Tuesday
As the city of Nürnberg states in a press release, the southwest bypass at the Nürnberg-Hafen interchange will be closed in both directions from the evening of Thursday, February 5th, until the morning of Monday, February 9th. Over the weekend, the Public Space Service of Nürnberg ("Sör") will lift prefabricated steel components onto the new bridge piers. On Tuesday and Wednesday, February 3rd and 4th, only one lane per direction will be available. The reason: To prepare for the bridge construction work, guardrails and medians will be dismantled on those days.
Closures starting next Thursday
All drivers heading toward Feucht next week should prepare for alternative routes. On Thursday, February 5th, starting at 9 p.m., the following road sections will be closed: the exit from the Frankenschnellweg to the Südwesttangente toward Feucht will be shut. In addition, the Südwesttangente itself will be completely closed in the direction of Feucht. The exit from the Südwesttangente to Hafenstraße will also be inaccessible, as will the exit from the Frankenschnellweg onto the Südwesttangente toward Fürth coming from Eibach. According to the city of Nuremberg, one lane heading toward Fürth will also be closed. The exit from the Frankenschnellweg to the Südwesttangente toward Feucht will reopen on Saturday, February 7th, at 6 a.m.
Road closures next weekend
On Saturday, February 7, several road sections will be closed from 5 a.m. onwards. The Südwesttangente will be completely closed over the weekend in both directions—towards Fürth and towards Feucht. The exit from the Südwesttangente to Hafenstraße will also remain blocked throughout the weekend. Additionally, the exit from the Frankenschnellweg leading to the Südwesttangente towards Fürth will be closed, but this closure will last only one hour. According to the city of Nuremberg, this section will reopen at 6 a.m. on the same day.
All other closures will be lifted on Monday, February 9, from 5 a.m. The Südwesttangente will then remain reduced to a single lane until Tuesday, February 10.
Bypasses of the Südwesttangente
According to the city, there will be no signposted detour. Sör advises drivers to bypass the Nürnberg-Hafen junction via a wide route. Those heading to Feucht can take Schweinauer Hauptstraße, the Mittlere Ring, and Münchener Straße from Nürnberg-Schweinau. Motorists traveling to Fürth can go from Nürnberg-Hafen-Ost via the Frankenschnellweg toward the city center, then Nopitschstraße and Schweinauer Hauptstraße.
Major construction site for years
The Background: The harbor bridges from the 1970s must be completely rebuilt due to their structural condition, according to the city of Nuremberg. The project includes the bridges over the Südwesttangente and the Main-Donau-Kanal along the Finkenbrunn – Hafenstraße traffic axis, as well as the Frankenschnellweg bridge. During construction, one half of each bridge will remain operational. The western section was already dismantled in 2025. Completion is scheduled for 2029.
