Fürth - The sky over Fürth displayed astonishing colors on December 3rd. People witnessed a purple glow. Here’s what might have caused it.

“We’ll stay awake until the clouds turn purple again” - these are the lyrics rapper Materia sings in his song “Lila Wolken.” Yesterday, over Fürth, it seemed this moment had arrived: The sky towards the hospital displayed an unusual palette of colors on the evening of December 3rd. Photos leaked to the editorial team reveal a blue-purple glow shimmering on the horizon. But what’s behind this phenomenon?

Auroras, which have recently been visible over Bavaria as well, typically appear in shades of green or red.

It cannot be determined with absolute certainty what caused the display of colors seen in several photos online. However, one plausible explanation is that December 3rd is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. On this occasion, the campaign #PurpleLightUp was launched. Buildings and landmarks are illuminated in purple, which could explain the colorful sky over Fürth.
