The Middle Franconia Police Headquarters has recently observed an increase in cases where individuals posed as tradesmen to offer roof repairs and the disposal of asbestos-containing corrugated cement sheets. According to a statement from the department, such incidents had already risen to a moderate double-digit range between 2019 and 2020. In many instances, the perpetrators allegedly disposed of the asbestos-laden sheets illegally in the forests of Middle Franconia. Asbestos is a hazardous substance that can cause severe illnesses even in minimal amounts.
Between July and November, another surge in these offenses was recorded. The specialized commission for environmental crimes within the criminal investigation department conducted "extensive investigations and on-site examinations." In ten cases, the suspects charged their clients exorbitant fees for their services. In one instance, officers were able to link an illegal dumping incident in "Nürnberg-Kraftshof" to one of the reported cases.
Even with the evidence recovered, the officers were able to identify around 23 suspects and resolve all currently known cases. The suspects range in age from 19 to 51 years old. Investigators also confiscated two vans, which were reportedly used to commit the offenses, the statement further explains. Overall, the matter involves approximately 70,000 euros.
The suspects now face criminal charges on suspicion of fraud, illegal waste handling, and violations of the Chemicals Act. Proper and specified disposal of asbestos is crucial for protecting the environment and public health. Illegal disposal is punishable by law: according to Section 326 of the Criminal Code, unauthorized handling of carcinogenic substances such as asbestos, or their improper disposal, can be penalized with up to five years imprisonment or a fine.
