Nürnberg - The pre-Christmas season is the time for homemade cookies. Whether brightly decorated, simple and plain, or stamped with sweet messages, butter cookies are always a hit.

Butter cookies are not only beloved by everyone but also real eye-catchers. For those who prefer simplicity and are short on time, this recipe is a must-try.

The ingredients:

For the shortcrust pastry:

  • 125 grams cold butter
  • 200 grams wheat flour (type 405)
  • 100 grams sugar
  • 1 packet of vanilla sugar
  • 1 egg (size M)
  • A little flour for dough handling

For the icing and decoration:

  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 6 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • Various sugar decorations

When it comes to decoration, everyone can let their imagination run wild.

The preparation:

For the shortcrust pastry, knead butter, flour, sugar, vanilla sugar, and the egg into a smooth dough. Refrigerate the dough for one hour. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (top and bottom heat). Lightly flour the work surface. Roll out the dough on the work surface to about ten millimeters thick and use various cookie cutters to cut out shapes. Place the cookies directly on the baking tray and bake in the preheated oven for around ten minutes. Let the cookies cool completely before decorating.

For the icing, mix powdered sugar and lemon juice together and spread it onto the cookies with a teaspoon. Finally, decorate with colorful sugar sprinkles. Allow the icing to set. Alternatively, the cookies can be brushed with egg yolk before baking and sprinkled with sugar decorations right away. This gives the cookies their classic golden color.

For those who want their cookies to be more colorful, the sugar icing can be tinted with food coloring as desired. If you’re looking for something a bit more elaborate and nutty, a gingerbread recipe is a great choice. Both treats make excellent gifts or a sweet surprise to brighten the day of loved ones.
