Deutsche Bahn is going mobile? That’s old hat. But now they want to add a second M to the first. Not only mobile, but also modern. It will start in around six months, if everything goes according to plan. „From 6 February to 10 July 2026, DB InfraGO will renew and modernize the railroad line between Nuremberg and Regensburg in a bundle - it is the first of seven planned general renovations in Bavaria,“ according to a press release on the Deutsche Bahn website. The aim of the five-month construction phase is to make the heavily used railroad line „more stable and resilient in the long term.“ This should significantly reduce disruptions and the associated delays.
What passengers can expect
DB InfraGO is currently making intensive preparations for the work along the route - together with the experienced construction companies Spitzke and Swietelsky, who were awarded the contract for the construction work following a Europe-wide tendering process. The planning of replacement services is also in full swing. Passengers and goods will continue to reach their destinations reliably during the construction phase. Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft (BEG) is currently working out the details of the transport concept for local rail passenger services together with the railroad companies involved and DB InfraGO.
The concept will be published in the fall. An Infomobile will then also be touring along the route. A new website already provides a good overview of the planned general refurbishments in Bavaria.
DB is currently making several diversion routes fit
The preparatory work for the actual general refurbishment has already begun this summer, starting in February. For example, surveying work is currently taking place. Environmental areas are being prepared and the subsoil is being explored. Track inspections are also taking place for further detailed planning. DB is also currently preparing several diversionary routes, including the Danube Valley line between Regensburg and Ingolstadt and the Regensburg - Schwandorf and Munich - Rosenheim - Salzburg lines.
During the general refurbishment between February and July 2026, DB is renewing around 80 kilometers of track, 40 points and over 60 kilometers of overhead lines between Nuremberg and Regensburg. Additional points connections (transfer points) will be created to provide more flexibility in the event of disruptions or construction sites on the line. In addition, a railroad embankment near Deining and a bridge near Burgthann will be renovated. The control and safety technology is being modernized and preparations are being made for the installation of the modern ETCS train control system.
Passengers should benefit from attractive stations after the general refurbishment
Passengers will also benefit from attractive stations following the general refurbishment. DB is modernizing all 20 stations between Feucht and Regensburg-Prüfening according to „a holistic and clear quality standard with an attractive design,“ as the press release states. Among other things, the focus is on barrier-free expansion. Platforms will be renewed at eight stations. Elevators are being installed in Beratzhausen, Parsberg and Seubersdorf and the passenger information systems at the stations are being brought up to the latest state of the art.
The aim is to improve the quality of stay for all travelers and guests at the stations. By 2027, several stations along the route will also be developed into stations of the future - with newly designed passenger underpasses, more weather protection, modern lighting systems, consistent design concepts as well as more seating and waiting facilities and better parking options for bicycles.
