Pacifier - yes or no? This question divides parents. Mothers and fathers who follow contemporary trends demonize it, opting to try without it. Others rely on it to soothe their baby more easily and help them sleep better. However, now more and more young adults are turning to this tool once again - but not for their babies, rather for themselves.
The trend is said to have originated in China, but now numerous videos from other countries can be found on TikTok: adults sucking on pacifiers, hoping for various benefits. It is claimed to help people with ADHD focus better, alleviate anxiety, reduce stress, and generally contribute to a greater sense of well-being. Therefore, it is used while working on a laptop, reading, or simply to relax. A pacifier is also suggested to be helpful for quitting smoking or curbing annoying nail-biting habits.
Money is being made with the trend
The trend is also leading to an increasing number of these pacifiers being offered in an adult version. The online portal "watson" reports on companies and platforms that sell special adult pacifiers ranging from 1.19 euros to 60 euros. Such pacifiers can also be found on Amazon in various shapes, colors, and with or without glittering stones—mostly priced between approximately 7 euros and 30 euros.
Experts warn against pacifier trend
In a report by the Chinese broadcaster "South China Morning Post," the trend is discussed with cautionary notes from experts about the potential harm of regular pacifier use. Dentist Tang Caomin warns that it can hinder the ability to open the mouth and cause pain while chewing, as prolonged use might lead to teeth misalignment. Psychologist Zhang Mo also cautions against viewing pacifiers as a cure-all for mental issues. She argues that reverting to a childlike state is not advisable; instead, one should confront challenging situations and work on personal development.
