On Thursday, June 26, 2025, at 6:30 PM, the Human Rights Office of the City of Nürnberg, the „Kulturladen Zeltnerschloss“, and „LUISE - the cultfactory“ extend an invitation to a unique event as part of the "Gleißhammer - District for Human Rights" project. BR editor and investigative journalist Jonas Miller, a member of the research team from „BR“ and „NN“, will provide insights into new findings surrounding the "NSU" complex, which still leaves many questions unanswered to this day. The event will take place at „LUISE – the cultfactory“, Scharrerstraße 15. Admission is free.
A stand against racism, right-wing terrorism and for human rights
According to a press release from the city of Nürnberg, the evening is part of a series of commemorative events marking the 20th anniversary of Ismail Yaşar's death, with which the local community collectively aims to stand against racism, right-wing terrorism, and support human rights. Ismail Yaşar was murdered on June 9, 2005, by the right-wing extremist terrorist group known as the "Nationalsozialistischer Untergrund" (NSU) at his kebab shop opposite the „Scharrerschule“. He was the sixth victim in the nationwide series of horrific attacks.
"Immeasurable personal suffering for his family"
"The murder of Ismail Yaşar caused immeasurable personal suffering for his family and all who knew him," emphasizes Martina Mittenhuber, head of the Human Rights Office. "As a city, we do everything possible to ensure that such crimes are never repeated. This includes supporting all efforts to investigate and research the background of the murder and attack series, and encouraging citizens to engage with the topic of the 'NSU' in their own city. To this end, a wide-ranging initiative from civil society organizations and the city has created a dedicated website that focuses particularly on the victims."
